AT WARMINSTER COMMUNITY PARK (WCP)
This 243-acre parcel was received as a public benefit transfer (free) from the US Department of the Interior with a real estate value of over $15 million. To the residents of this community who strive to preserve open space, the value is priceless. We invite everyone to visit the site, take a walk, cross country ski, bike or rollerblade, play on the playground, picnic in the pavilion or relax by the pond.
Safety Town planning underway: After a brief hiatus, the Parks & Recreation Department, working with the multi-talented residents of Ann’s Choice, has continued researching the possibility of installing a “safety town” on the runway at Warminster Community Park. If successful, this miniaturized “Warminster” would be available to big wheel and tricycle users. During this planning stage, we are looking for business partners and grants to promote construction.
Anechoic Chamber: Penn State University now leases the anechoic chamber (big beige building located by Bristol Road). The PSU Applied Research Laboratory is using the facility for radar testing and other technical programs. Check out future directories for cooperative community recreation/science programs being hosted by the college and the Parks Department.
Grant Update: Work has begun on the installation of electric and water lines for the Dog Park and maintenance building. Throughout the summer and into the fall, residents will see new construction all over the park as this work continues. The matching $100,000 grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) will continue our Master Site Plan development at WCP. As soon as the weather is warm enough, the basketball courts will be paved and the labyrinth garden laid out. The dog park pavilion and maintenance facility have been ordered and the contracts for all construction have been signed. Businesses interested in making donations towards any of the projects in this grant cycle (dog park, labyrinth garden, basketball courts and maintenance facility) should contact the Parks & Recreation office. We hope to have the entire project completed by the end of 2009.
Tree Installation: In March, 50 new bare root trees were installed as part of the Penna. Horticultural Society & Tree Vitalize programs. These trees were purchased at a deep discount ($50/tree) and installed throughout the park – many replacing those that were damage last year by deer. In the fall, there will be another tree installation in several parks throughout the Township.
Wind Turbine Testing: The Parks Department, working with local business, OmniWind Energy Systems, LLC, has installed an anemometer at WCP to determine if there is enough wind to install a permanent wind turbine on site. This new technology is smaller, quieter and safer than those large turbines seen on mountain tops. We hope that this turbine will offset some of the electric costs for the new maintenance facility that will be installed in the summer.
Trail Maps Available On-Line!
Over 6 miles of paved trail which bisect the park to create a multitude of walking, biking and running opportunities are available at WCP & Munro! Besides being posted on the bulletin board, a map can be downloaded from the Township website for personal use.
