AT WARMINSTER COMMUNITY PARK (WCP)
As WCP becomes more popular, the number of residents from Warminster and the surrounding communities that enjoy this new park continues to grow. We invite everyone to visit the site, take a walk, cross country ski, bike or rollerblade, play on the playground, picnic in the pavilion or relax by the pond. This 243-acre parcel was received as a public benefit transfer (free) from the US Department of the Interior with a real estate value of over $15 million. To the residents of this community who strive to preserve open space, the value is priceless. There will never be another opportunity for this municipality to preserve such a large parcel of open space for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
Safety Town planning underway: The Parks & Recreation Department, working with the multi-talented residents of Ann’s Choice, has begun to research the possibility of installing a “safety town” on the runway at Warminster Community Park. If successful, this miniaturized version of Warminster would be available to big wheel and tricycle users. During this planning stage, we are looking for business partners and grants to promote construction.
Penn State University leases the anechoic chamber: That big beige building and tower located by Bristol Road are being leased by PSU Applied Research Laboratory for radar testing and other technical programs. Check out future directories for cooperative community recreation/science programs being hosted by the college and the Parks Department.
Grant Update: Bids for the grant work at WCP were received in December, 2008. This matching $100,000 grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) will continue our Master Site Plan development at WCP. The basketball courts have been surveyed and marked, the area for the labyrinth garden staked and mowed. Businesses interested in making donations towards any of the projects in this grant cycle (dog park, labyrinth garden, basketball courts and maintenance facility) should contact the Parks & Recreation office. Work will continue throughout the winter as we hope to have the entire project completed by the end of 2009.
Deer Damage: If you visited WCP this fall, you saw a ”tree-mendous” amount of trunk damage due to deer rutting. Trunk protectors offered no defense against their aggressive antlers. In late fall, we sprayed all the trunks with a natural substance with a strong peppermint oil base (which deer don’t like) but by then, much damage had been done. Next spring, we will be replacing the trees that have been destroyed by the deer and treat all trunks much earlier in the season.
Trail Maps are Available!
There are now over 6 miles of paved trail at WCP! Besides being posted on the bulletin board, a map can be downloaded from the Township website for personal use. These trails bisect the park to create a multitude of walking, biking and running opportunities. Along the way, you’ll experience some hidden park treasures and enjoy much of the wildlife. Please note the posted trail signs for everyone’s safety!
Special Events At WCP
Warminster Community Park is proving to be a popular spot for community special events due to unique site attributes. In 2008, we hosted the Sport Car Club of America, Police, Fire and Emergency Vehicle Training, Alpha Dog Training Trials, Philly Fit Magazine 5K, Big Brother/Big Sister 5K, Bucks Co. 4-H Teen Council, Carol for Heart, Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue, Craven Hall Historical Society 5K Run & Health Walk, Ivyland Peach Festival Run; Ford V-8 Specialty & Antique Car show; Scout troops, Warminster Days, as well as Centennial Schools, Head Start, numerous churches, sport organizations and many families. Organizations interested in holding events at WCP should contact the Parks & Recreation Department or download the Special Event form from the township website: www.warminstertownship.org. Events must be presented and approved by the Park Board at their monthly meetings, so organizations should submit permit requests at least three (3) months in advance of the event.
EAGLE SCOUT/GOLD STAR PROJECT
The Township is looking for additional Eagle scouts candidates, Gold Star contenders, or Scout Troops who are interested in community service hours to assist with a storm water protection project. We extend our thanks to Eagle Scout candidate, Gary Reilly, for completing one of the 13 neighborhoods within this project. In accordance with DEP regulations, all of the storm water drains in the municipality need to be marked or stenciled with “no dumping”. Any troop or scout interested in this project should contact the Parks & Recreation Department at (215)443-5428 as soon as possible.
